THE IMPACT OF THE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS DIRECTIVE

TAKE ACTION NOW!

You may already be aware that the threat posed by the EU Food Supplements Directive for setting maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in food supplements could have a devastating effect on the industry and not only those who choose to use effective nutritional supplements but also those who are against the erosion of personal choice. The EU framework starts to really bite between 2010 and 2011 when we could see:

  • massive restrictions on allowed ingredients, including vitamin and mineral forms, as well as botanicals;

  • massive restrictions on maximum permitted doses of vitamins and minerals;

  • massive restrictions on what can be said about any product with beneficial properties;

  • imposition of pharmaceutical-type standards, making it difficult for many truly natural products to comply.

The Health Food Manufacturers Association www.hfma.co.uk has recently produced an Impact Assessment which quantifies the potential impact of the proposed legislation and identifies the following key risks:

  • Well over £100m of sales may be lost;

  • Heavy impact on suppliers resulting in business closures; a NAHS survey estimates that over 700 independent health food stores could close resulting in approximately 4000 job losses;

  • Imports of higher potency supplements, notably from Guernsey and Jersey that remain outside UK and EU medicines and food legislative regimes, will increase from their current levels significantly. This would expose UK and EU consumers to the dangers of unregulated supply.

This disproportionate, poorly thought-through and discriminatory legislation represents the single greatest threat to the ongoing expansion of natural health in the European Union.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT ?

The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) is an international not-for-profit organisation working to promote healthcare and food production systems that work with, rather than against, the laws of nature. Along with HFMA, they are at the forefront of pushing for a more fitting regulatory framework for natural health. Consumers for Health Choice (CHC), an independent consumer organisation, is also very active and they have a petition which you can sign and a draft letter which you can send from their website to Commissioner John Dalli in Brussels.

To find out what you can do to protect your rights to healthy, wholesome, unadulterated food and food supplements and stay up-to-date with latest developments, visit:
